What Are Void Items and How Does Corruption Work?

Void items are a unique tier of collectibles introduced in the Survivors of the Void expansion for Risk of Rain 2. Unlike standard items, these purple-bordered collectibles serve as "corrupted" versions of existing gear. When you pick up a Void item, every stack of its corresponding standard item in your inventory is immediately and permanently converted into the Void variant.

According to community feedback and official game data, this conversion is one-way. Once an item is corrupted, it cannot be reverted to its original form for the remainder of your run. Furthermore, Void items cannot be used in Scrappers, 3D Printers, or Cleansing Pools, as they have no "Void Scrap" equivalent. They are treated as distinct entities by the game engine, meaning they function independently of standard item stacking rules, though they maintain the original rarity tier of their counterpart for systems like the Artifact of Command or Benthic Bloom.

How to Obtain Void Items

Finding Void items requires specific interactables found throughout the stages of Petrichor V. You will not find these in standard loot chests.

  • Void Cradles: The most common source. These spawn randomly on any stage and cost 50% of your current health to open. Opening one rewards you with a random Void item and spawns several Void Infestors.
  • Void Fields: Accessed via the Null Portal in the Bazaar Between Time, this hidden realm allows you to complete nine cell events. Successfully finishing these grants you Void Potential orbs, which let you choose one of three Void items.
  • Encrusted Key: If you pick up this Void item, it will spawn a hidden Encrusted Cache on every subsequent stage. Opening these caches provides a consistent supply of Void items at different rarity tiers.

Warning

The Newly Hatched Zoea Exception Unlike other Void items that corrupt a single specific counterpart, the boss-tier Newly Hatched Zoea corrupts all yellow boss-tier items in your inventory simultaneously. Exercise extreme caution before picking this up if your build relies on specific boss items like the Molten Perforator or Shatterspleen.

Evaluating Key Void Items

While many Void items are direct upgrades, their utility often depends on your current build and the survivor you are playing.

High-Impact Choices

  • Lysate Cell: Widely regarded by players as the best Void item. It adds an extra charge to your Special skill and reduces its cooldown by 33%, providing significant power spikes for almost every survivor.
  • Safer Spaces: The corrupted version of Tougher Times. It guarantees damage blockage on a recharge timer rather than relying on chance. This is excellent for ensuring survivability, especially in high-difficulty modes like Monsoon or Eclipse.
  • Weeping Fungus: A clear upgrade over Bustling Fungus. It allows you to heal for 2% of your maximum health per second while sprinting, removing the need to stand still—a crucial change for maintaining mobility during combat.

Situational Items

  • Benthic Bloom: This legendary item upgrades three random items to the next rarity tier at the start of each stage. While it can snowball your build into an unstoppable force, it is a high-risk item because it will eventually consume your core white and green utility items, potentially leaving you with an inventory full of red items that lack synergy.
  • Lost Seer's Lenses: While a 0.5% chance to instantly kill non-boss enemies is powerful for clearing crowds, it effectively removes your ability to gain critical strike chance from standard Lens-Maker's Glasses, which is often a net loss for damage output against bosses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I scrap Void items?

No. Void items cannot be put into a Scrapper, nor can they be used in 3D Printers or Cleansing Pools. You must be careful about your item choices, as once an item is corrupted, it is permanent for that run.

How do Void items interact with the Artifact of Command?

When the Artifact of Command is active, Void items appear in Command Essences alongside their non-Void counterparts. This allows you to deliberately select them to force a corruption of your current inventory if you are looking to pivot your build strategy.

Are Void items always better than their counterparts?

Not necessarily. Items like the Singularity Band offer crowd control (black holes) instead of the high burst damage of the original bands. Depending on your survivor's kit, losing the burst damage might be a disadvantage. Always consider whether the trade-off in mechanics benefits your current run strategy.
