Unlocking the Drifter

The Drifter is a playable survivor added to Risk of Rain 2 via the Alloyed Collective expansion. To unlock this character, you must complete the "Lost in Transit" challenge.

Based on community reports, the unlock process involves a specific sequence of events during a run:

  1. Stage 3: Locate and activate the red access node. This triggers a boss fight against the "Soulless Amalgamator."
  2. Conduit Canyon: After the fight, enter the encrypted portal to reach Conduit Canyon. You must defeat "The Collective" elite enemies here to collect Sentry Keys.
  3. Sentry Terminals: Insert the Sentry Keys into the terminals scattered around the map to unlock the second half of the area.
  4. Final Boss: Defeat the "Soulless Control Unit," then the "Alloy Hunter." Proceed through the portal to "Solutional Haunt" to face the final boss.
  5. Completion: Once defeated, gather the required items from the coffers and interact with the matrix terminal to unlock the Drifter.

Drifter Playstyle and Mechanics

The Drifter is a "pack rat" survivor who thrives on resource management. Her playstyle revolves around generating and spending "Junk." Unlike other survivors who rely solely on cooldowns, the Drifter uses Junk to bypass these timers or empower her effects.

Her passive ability, "Trash to Treasure," is essential to her performance. By collecting Item Scrap (White, Green, Red, or Yellow), she gains permanent, stackable buffs:

  • White Scrap: +6% movement speed per stack.
  • Green Scrap: +3 HP/s regeneration per stack.
  • Red Scrap: +30% attack speed per stack.
  • Yellow Scrap: 15% skill cooldown reduction per stack.

Because of this, the Drifter benefits significantly from recycling bad items into scrap, turning seemingly useless drops into tangible power spikes.

Skill Breakdown and Loadouts

The Drifter's kit offers flexibility between raw damage and utility. Here is a breakdown of her core abilities:

Primary and Secondary Skills

  • Blunt Force (Primary): A simple melee bash that deals 170% damage, with the third hit dealing 350% and stunning enemies. It has a high chance to generate Junk.
  • Cleanup (Secondary): Tosses debris for 4x100% damage, plus a random projectile from your bag. You can spend 2 Junk to bypass the 6-second cooldown.
  • Junk Cube (Secondary): A powerful alternative. Drifter slams a large cube for 400% damage. You can hit the cube to launch it at enemies or stand on it to use it for mobility, which scales with attack speed rather than movement speed.

Utility and Special Skills

  • Repossess (Utility): This is arguably the Drifter's most versatile tool. You can bag monsters or interactables (like turrets or shrines). Bagged objects can be thrown or bludgeoned for damage.
  • Tornado Slam (Utility): An alternative mobility skill that spins forward, dealing damage and generating Junk. It is useful for chaining hits against heavy enemies.
  • Salvage (Special): Consumes 8 Junk to spawn 4 temporary items.
  • Tinker (Special): Consumes 8 Junk to fire a shockwave that applies debuffs and acts as a scrapper/recycler. This is highly effective for rerolling printers or multishops.

Strategic Tips for Success

To get the most out of the Drifter, consider these tactical approaches:

  • Mobility via Junk Cube: You can use the Junk Cube as a "surfboard." By standing on the cube and using your primary attack, you can move significantly faster than your default sprinting speed.
  • Repossess Utility: Use Repossess to move critical interactables, such as Shrines of the Woods or Gunner Turrets, closer to the teleporter event. This allows you to utilize their effects while defending the teleporter.
  • Tinker Wisely: When using Tinker, be mindful of your teammates. Rerolling a printer can be a powerful way to get better items, but ensure your team doesn't need the current item, as it might annoy them to lose a potential upgrade.
  • Avoid Corrupting Items: Be careful with items like the "Newly Hatched Zoea." Because this item corrupts yellow items, it will destroy your valuable Yellow Item Scrap, which is vital for your cooldown reduction passive.

Community Perspectives

Player experience regarding the Drifter has been largely positive, with many in the community praising the chaotic, fun nature of her kit. However, there is ongoing debate regarding skill balance.

Some players feel that "Repossess" is almost mandatory due to its extreme utility, often outclassing "Tornado Slam." Community discussions suggest that while the Junk Cube is fun and offers great mobility, it can be inconsistent in damage output. Players often recommend experimenting with different loadouts to see which fits your playstyle, but generally, the consensus is that the Drifter rewards those who can manage their Junk economy effectively during the heat of battle.
